Blue Anchor is on the coast a couple of miles north of the of
the A39 at Carhampton between Watchet and Minehead.
The beach gives the chance of long walks and stretches all
the way round past Dunster to Minehead in a big arc. The
West Somerset Steam Raliway runs nearby between
Bishops Lydeard Nr Taunton to the east and Minehead in the
west. To find the Chalet take the road north from Carhampton
and just after the level crossing turn left and go through the
gate and the chalet is just on the right.
Beach fishing is very popular along the front, Bass and
Pollock being caught just offshore from the Chalet. Deep sea
fishing is available from boats based at both Minehead and
Watchet. The Quantocks are very popular with walkers and
mountain bikers with many popular routes. Walking on the
beach I have seen kite surfers on quite a few occasions, and
there are sea rowing clubs based in the ports nearby. Bird
watchers are well catered for with rafts of shell duck just
offshore during the winter and plenty of waders on the mud
flats exposed at low tide. Peregrines nest on the cliffs and
Ravens are known to be nesting at the quarry at Triscombe on the Quantocks, and walking at Kilve to the East I am
convinced I saw a pair in the new year as they flew along the
cliffs to East Quantocks Head, then back towards Lilstock. The steam railway has two festivals one in the spring and
another in late summer, when they bring in a selection of
guest engines to run on the line. There is also a raft race at
the height of summer when the beach is a hive of activity for
a short time. |
